TERRORISM
Singapore is a safe country. Singapore has not encounter any terrorism attack yet except the planning of some terrorist attack by the Southeast Asia terrorist group; the JI a.k.a Jemaah Islamiya. Mas Selamat, one of the leaders of Jemaah Islamiya, was caught in Singapore first for terrorism activity as well as planning to start a terrorist attack in Singapore.
In January 2006, Mas Selamat was arrested by Indonesian anti-terror squads in Java and deported to Singapore. He was suspected of plotting to bomb Singapore Changi Airport in 2002. According to the Singapore Police Force, he initially planned to do so by first crushing a plane in the airport. However, Mas Selamat was not formally charged with any terrorism-related offences. Therefore he was detained under the Singapore ISA (Internal Security Act) which means indefinite trial.
Mas Selamat was the most wanted fugitive for over a year after escaping detention on 27 Febuary 2008. The search for him has been described the largest manhunt ever conducted in Singapore. A bounty was also placed for the capture of Mas Selamat. He was eventually recaptured on 1 April, 2009 in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. In September he is returning to Singapore for the same place where he was in prison to spend the rest of his life there.
Overall, Singapore is a safe country because the efficiency of the Singapore Police Force, Crime Investigation Department is very high. Singapore also has CCTVs placed at almost all of the area in Singapore. The Singapore Changi Airport also has many securities and many security checks are conducted. Therefore, terrorists have a very low chance of plotting to start a terrorist attack in Singapore.
